IoT software leader Wind River has announced a partnership with IBM to accelerate IoT deployment to industrial customers.
Together they will create ‘edge-to-cloud’ systems with simplification in mind, increasing the number of smart devices and guiding designers through the process of integrating services from the IBM Watson Cloud Platform with products from the Wind River Helix portfolio.
The partnership will see Wind River and IBM put forward all the elements required for a comprehensive edge-to-cloud IoT solution. It’s expected that Wind River operating systems and software products such as VxWorks, Wind River Rocket, Wind River Pulsar Linux, and Wind River Helix Cloud will help designers integrate with IBM’s Watson IoT Cloud Platform, IBM Bluemix, and IBM IoT Real-Time Insights.
Internet of Things for better business
In an official press release Bret Greenstein, VP of IBM Watson IoT, stated that: “IBM recognises that the Internet of Things offers transformative capability and is applying best of class connectivity, information management and cognitive capabilities, and teaming with Wind River for industrial solutions. Together, we aim to help engineers better create and manage connected things and enable business leaders to gain insights and make more informed business decisions.”
Accenture’s recent report into the future of the industrial IoT concluded that, for thousands of companies worldwide, the ‘potential payoff is enormous’.
Conservative estimates put global IIoT spending rising from $20 billion (£14 billion) back in 2012 to as high as $500 billion (£348 billion) by 2020. It’s hoped that businesses will harness the Industrial Internet of Thing (IIoT) s to boost growth and revenue in three different ways. First, IIoT technologies are expected to increase efficiency and scale up production. Second, smart technologies promise to fuel innovation, and finally, the entire industrial workforce is expected to undergo a rapid transformation.
