Telefónica’s cyber-security specialists, ElevenPaths, will present what it claims is the first available technology designed to combat Internet of Things (IoT) cyber-attacks at Mobile World Congress (MWC).
The ‘Faast’ solution was developed by ElevenPaths and it detects and analyses IoT security threats and vulnerabilities based on persistent penetration testing. Faast also provides users with cyber-security solutions to protect devices connected to their systems, such as web cams, routers and televisions.
Companies using Faast can scan their IoT devices to identify real-life attack techniques that could be used against them. Vulnerabilities such as insecure network services, authentication issues, and a lack of encryption when transmitting information, are all detected by Faast. These issues can then be managed on all connected devices through a website called ‘Vamps’.

CEO of ElevenPaths, Chema Alonso, said in a statement: “Traditional periodic security checks don’t make sense anymore because the changes in the infrastructure, the emergence of new vulnerabilities and different bugs are continuing.
“The evolution of Vamps & Faast towards IoT will allow companies to rely on a persistent pen testing and vulnerability management system that will facilitate the quick discovery of new connected devices and possible bugs, thereby reducing the exposure time of these devices to these threats”.
Faast’s analysis adds to Telefónica’s portfolio of IoT security solutions, including Trusted Public Key Infrastructure, Security Monitoring, and CyberThreats.
A number of security vendors, including Telefonica but also F-Secure and Kaspersky, are looking at solutions to secure IoT devices, which to date have been found to be incredibly insecure and very open to external attack and accidental data leakage.
Mobile World Congress takes place in Barcelona, Spain next week, with IoT, smart cities and cyber-security expected to be prominent themes during the show.
