Sierra Wireless launches cloud-managed LPWA mobile router for IoT

Router will provide connectivity to range of IoT applications, says the company.

NEWSBYTE Sierra Wireless has launched the AirLink LX60, which it claims is the industry’s first cloud-managed Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) mobile router for the IoT.

The router comes in two versions: LTE-M/NB-IoT (with up to 300 kbps downlink) for enhanced coverage, and LTE Cat-4 (with up to 150Mbps downlink) for higher throughput.

Both feature dual Gigabit Ethernet ports – which are LAN/WAN switchable to support primary and backup connections – as well as RS-232, RS-485, and I/O ports.

Sierra Wireless said this makes it easy to connect existing machines without the need for added adapters and converters. The LTE Cat-4 variant is available with optional Wi-Fi and GNSS capabilities, for retail and commercial fleet applications.

The AirLink LX60 also enables IoT edge programmability, supporting the ALEOS Application Framework for embedded applications, as well as integrated cloud services and APIs.

The company said these features, combined with LTE-M/NB-IoT connectivity and I/O options for data acquisition and sensor aggregation, enable critical data to be processed at the edge.

The LTE-M/NB-IoT version also provides enhanced coverage in remote locations or buildings, while reducing airtime costs by up to 60 per cent.

Mission critical

“With more than three million routers and gateways deployed, Sierra Wireless is a trusted partner for thousands of customers. They rely on AirLink Networking Solutions to provide secure, managed connectivity for mission-critical applications in some of the harshest operating conditions on the planet,” said Jason Krause, senior VP and general manager of Enterprise Solutions at Sierra Wireless.

“The new LX60 provides the same connectivity experience and flexibility as our rugged performance portfolio, but in a new package that is optimised to meet commercial and enterprise IoT application requirements.”

Cat-4 variants are available for preview now, with commercial availability beginning in April 2018. LX60 LTE-M/NB-IoT samples will be available in May 2018.

Internet of Business says

As the IoT space hots up in real-world field deployments, speed and manageability will be critical, especially in the edge environment, where a lot of IoT processing will take place.
