Connected tech and cloud company, Libelium, has announced a new IoT platform in a bid to become a key player in the growing Internet of Things (IoT) market.
The Waspmote and Plug & Sense product families, developed and pioneered by the firm, are capable of providing capabilities to hundreds of sensors.
They cover a variation of IoT applications, including smart parking, smart environment, smart cities, smart home, smart water, smart agriculture and big enterprise.
Big industry focus
Although based on the original version of Waspmote platform, the new platform comes with many new features. For starters, the kit’s air and water sensors have been updated for enhanced particle measurement.
As well as this, it also sports actuators that are capable of controlling DC units such as motors, thermostats, motors, illumination system and irrigation valves.
Libelium has opted to create a platform that suits big industry users primarily. There are some new energy saving nodes, too. They carry a lifetime of up to ten years.
Fighting fragmentation with an IoT platform
There’s no denying that the Internet of Things market is crowded and fragmented. Interoperability is key for everything to fit together, and Libelium has identified that.
The IoT platform supports even more communication radios, including LoRaWAN, Sigfox, WiFi, 4G, 802.15.4 / ZigBee and 868 / 900 RF – meaning it can work with many devices.
That’s not all, though. The Plug & Sense 4G US model, a sensor device, has become the first IoT product to pass the PTCRB and AT&T compliant device tests.
Because of this, companies will be able to go on to develop large-scale IoT cellular projects in the US, which would be a lucrative opportunity for companies like Libelium.
Security to the max
Security is another important area covered by the platform, integrating five different layers that provide encryption for data privacy, authentication and message integrity.
The company hopes this will attract big firms and governments. It also offers cloud connectivity with the likes of Amazon, IBM, Microsoft, Telefonica and Thingworx.
