Dell has announced the launch of two new embedded box PCs, aimed at helping smart systems connect to the Internet of Things (IoT).
The Dell Embedded Box PC 3000 and 5000 Series also mark the company’s entry into the purpose-built industrial PC (IPC) market. Both devices are fanless, ruggedized and built to withstand operating temperatures ranging from 0°C to 50°C.
Embedded PCs or systems are self-contained devices that are designed to be part of a larger system and hence usually perform specialised functions. They are often notable for their small size and high levels of reliability, and are expected to be a huge driver in the growth of the IoT market, where bespoke sensors will be incorporated into existing computer systems.
Andy Rhodes, executive director, commercial IoT solutions, Dell, believes that his company’s new embedded PCs can help overcome some of the technology’s common problems.
“Customers have consistently told us that current embedded solutions do not meet the level of cost-effective sophistication, scale and support they need for these to be a critical, reliable component of their operations,” he said. “Along with our new embedded products that can be ordered in quantities from one to thousands, Dell will bring our established business heritage to this new market.”
Targeting industrial IoT
The Embedded Box PC 3000 and 5000 Series could provide Dell with an entry into the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) market, where embedded PCs are vital for automation and systems monitoring. Kenny Ingram, global construction industry director at IFS, explained to Internet of Business that a number of industry benefits are being provided by IoT technology.
“Intelligent scheduling algorithms help construction businesses optimise their workforce, as labour resources are measured, tracked and re-allocated to ensure they are used productively,” he said. “More powerful and precise ‘smart’ technologies are already being used to enable construction projects to be completed quicker and more efficiently [and] as these technologies become more prevalent, the skills of site workers will shift to technology management, analysis and repair.”
In particular, Dell has cited the 5000 Series as being optimised for I/O scalability and industrial IoT use cases due to its high-bandwidth and processing power.
Both the Embedded Box PC 3000 Series and 5000 Series – which were unveiled at MWC and Embedded World this week – will be available in select countries from summer 2016, with prices starting from $1,099 (£786) and $1,699 (£1,215) respectively.
