Cisco invests in Japanese IoT start-up Kii

Cisco is investing in Kii’s cloud software in developing business, industrial and consumer focused Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

The cloud platform allows device manufacturers and IoT solution providers to create connected solutions with IoT data sources integrated into cloud services for IoT use.

Data sources stream through ‘the Thing Interaction Framework’ cloud software, and can feed into Cisco’s mobile platform. With the additional data sources, they can provide data-rich experiences for customers.

Kii’s cloud focuses on IoT uses within sensor-cloud-app interactions, such as sensor state registration/retrieval, and trigger-driven command execution on devices. According to Kii, this will cause a reduction in amounts server code needed to implement, and IoT device manufacturers and mobile app developers can modify framework with new SDKs.

Miyuki Suzuki, president and general manager of Cisco Systems said: “Building compelling mobile and IoE [‘Internet of Everything’ – Cisco’s term for IoT – Ed] solutions requires a multifaceted effort – and the backend platform is one of the key ingredients. We believe our investment in Kii will help support the development of a platform that offers the ease of use, features and scalability needed to bring IoE solutions to market rapidly.”
