NEWSBYTE China Mobile Hong Kong has completed a series of 5G network tests, achieving speeds of up to 14 Gbps.
The announcement means that the company is the first network provider in Hong Kong to complete full 5G network (client terminal to application) testing successfully.
Using customer premises equipment (CPE), China Mobile built an end-to-end 5G network, to which computers and non-5G mobile terminals are able to connect via WiFi.
The company implemented the 5G network in a static environment using the 28GHz millimetre-wave spectrum, along with 800MHz bandwidth and 4×4 multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) technology.
The claimed speeds of up to 14 Gbps using this configuration are significantly higher than the previous 2×2 MIMO technology test results of eight Gbps reported by other mobile carriers, said the company today.
China Mobile is planning to build a more extensive 28GHz 5G network in select locations by the end of the year to conduct wider field tests.
Using the 3.5 GHz spectrum (100 MHz bandwidth), the highest data transmission speeds achieved to date in an indoor environment are up to 700 Mbps, the firm added.
Full service 5G network by 2019
China Mobile said that its 5G network would provide full services when the 5G spectrum is officially released in Hong Kong next year. The carrier opened a 5G innovation centre and research lab in the region earlier this year.
Among its numerous experimental applications, the mobile operator has participated in a tree-monitoring pilot scheme in Tai Tong, Yuen Long.
Using NB-IoT technology, China Mobile installed sensors in trees to monitor and analyse their health. The adoption of 5G technology will enable it to expand its NB-IoT capacity to monitor the health of forests throughout the region, it said.
The company is also working with partners to develop a range of smart city applications – such as smart street lights – to be better equipped for 5G network construction and application development in the future.
