Smart meter provider, Itron, has joined up with IoT software supplier, Bsquare, to create an IoT app community for utilities using grid edge devices.
Itron, a company dedicated to the resourceful use of energy and water, provides a solution known as OpenWay Riva – a multi-application network that separates network infrastructure from the devices and apps that run on it.
The company will use Bsquare’s DataV IoT software stack to enable utilities to easily download apps for edge devices such as sensors and meters, and manage them within the OpenWay Riva network.
The companies say the ability for utilities to securely distribute apps to meters and grid devices ‘can add a wide range of functionality over time, thereby adding value to fixed capital assets.’

Adding intelligence to the edge of the network
Itron’s OpenWay Riva solution enables real-time analysis of data and peer-to-peer communication among IoT devices at the edge of the network.
With the addition of Bsquare’s DataV middleware embedded within the network it should allow utilities to securely download apps to meters easily, enabling new functionality and capabilities. It should also give the community the ability to efficiently manage and monitor the status of millions of remote devices.
The companies suggest applications that can be dynamically added to IoT devices include advanced theft detection, high impedance detection, load disaggregation, locational awareness, and active demand response.
Interestingly, third party developers will also be able to provide their applications to the OpenWay Riva App Community.

Benefits for utilities
Mark de Vere White, president of Itron’s Electricity business line, suggested this community will help to improve grid reliability, reduce operating costs and enhance revenue opportunities for utilities.
“With the interest from third parties, including utilities, we expect hundreds of apps available over time. These app community capabilities make it easier for our customers to access apps and deliver and manage them over the OpenWay Riva network. It’s just like having a highly secure smart phone and app store available for every OpenWay Riva device,” de Vere White said.
